Player Skill Levels

TPC members are required to obtain a TPC skill level in order to play in drop-ins, round-robins and leveled club events.

TPC is a social pickleball club, and the ratings are to help accommodate the court shortage and allow for leveled play.
A TPC skill level may be obtained by passing a club skill rating session. If you are unfamiliar with the guidelines for each level, review the skill level requirements linked below. Alternatively, you may submit documentation of an IPTPA or UTPR rating. DUPR ratings with at least 25 games/matches and a reliability rating of 60 or higher will also be accepted. Please email documentation to ratings@trilogypickleball.com . All IPTPA, UTPR, and DUPR scores will be verified.

Scheduling Club Rating Sessions

Unrated members are welcome to play in 2.0 scheduled play time periods.

- Jackson Guan will be handling TPC ratings and assisted by Curtis Aylward.
- Members should fill out this form. and Jackson will contact you to schedule.
- Cost is $40/rating, paid directly to Jackson.
- Ratings will be held at a time/court convenient for all.
- Rating sessions require 2+ people being rated. Jackson will maintain a waitlist until enough people have signed up for a particular level.
- There is no required waiting period between rating sessions.
- Rating results will be emailed to the board, and players profiles will be updated to allow for sign-up at their new level.

- TPC Skill Assessment 2.5
- TPC Skill Assessment 3.0
- TPC Skill Assessment 3.5
- TPC Skill Assessment 4.0
- TPC Skill Assessment 4.5
- TPC Skill Assessment 4.5 may also be met with any of the following:

- DUPR of 4.5
- ITPTA of 4.5
- Medaled in a tournament within the past 24 months at 4.0 or higher.
Ratings Questions and Answers
1. Why are we switching the rating process?
Answer: There are several reasons for this change beginning with the continued growth of the club and the limited court time for rating sessions. The club has held 4 rating sessions/month during the club season, which has become an unreasonable time and work load on the raters. In addition, the dates/times were relatively fixed, and did not allow for any flexibility in scheduling. We also field concerns of a perceived bias when neighbors and friends are rating each other. Moving to a rater outside the community allows for flexible scheduling, lessens the work load for the volunteers, and removes any perceived bias. The board prefers to focus on more club activities and opportunities for our members.
2. How often can a player rate?
Answer: A player can rate as often as they want at a rate of $40/rating session.
3. What is the best way to prepare for the rating session?
Answer:
- Print the rating sheet for your session and practice the skills.
- Reach out to a friend to help run through the skills and determine proficiency.
- Some levels have specific proficiency markers. A serve and return for a 3.5 level must be at least 50% or deeper in the serving box. One could use a water bottle to mark this spot while practicing.
- An unattackable 3rd shot drop, means the drop cannot be attacked by the receiving team. It must either be too low to attack or too shallow (close to the net) to attack.
- Practice the rating process with a friend and have them use the scoring sheet.

4. Why is there such a vast difference in skill levels within each level?
Answer: The rating system and expectations have vastly changed over the club’s existence which has created some disparity. As players are injured, play less, or simply become less able to perform at the level, they have not lowered their rating level to play at their current competitive level.
5. Will Jackson follow the current rating sheets for our club?
Answer: Yes. The same rating sheets will be used for 2.5 – 4.5. Candidates will need to pass all of the skill assessments and the game playing assessment to advance to the next rating. New this year, is that members may also test to 4.5, and the IPTPA 4.5 rating sheet will be used.
6. How does a player lower their rating?
Answer: Any player wanting to play at a lower level should email ratings@trilogypickleball.com with their request to move to a lower level. Once the change is processed, your Events Calendar will display the events at your new level.
7. Where can I find information on standardized rating levels used within the pickleball organizations?
8. Can DUPR scores still be used?
Answer: Yes. A DUPR rating that matches the desired level with a minimum of 25 games and a reliability rating of 60 or higher may be used. DUPR matches will be verified.
9. Can I use my rating from a previous club.
Answer: Letters from other clubs will not be accepted in lieu of rating. There is too much discrepancy between standards of play at each level.
10. Can I use an IPTPA rating?
Answer: Yes. An IPTPA rating may be used for advancement or placement into a level. IPTPA levels will be verified.
11. Can I get rated by someone else for my TPC rating?
Answer: At this time, outside ratings must be done through Jackson Guan. Jackson and Curtis have been vetted by our HOA, the TPC Board, and are familiar with our standards of play.
